Classification: Angrite
Place/Time: 2023 in Ghadamis, Libya
Mass: 4kg
Gadamis 007
History: Many individuals and fragments weighing 4 kg were found near the city of Sinawin, Libya, in 2023.
Physical characteristics: The exterior of the sample is dark reddish brown in color and shows a brecciated texture composed of up to cm-sized clasts with igneous textures. Small patches of fusion crust can be observed on the sample. The cut face shows a brecciated texture composed of coarse-grained cumulate textured clast set within granular debris.
Petrography: Description and classification (A. Love, App) Sample is a breccia composed of basaltic and cumulate textured clasts with 2 distinct grainsizes (average 1186 µm and 2389 µm) separated by a brecciated mix of anhedral grains. Clasts and matrix are composed of pink Al-Ti augite, spinel, olivine and twinned anorthite. Kirschsteinite was not detected. Additional minerals are: troilite, barite, merrillite and rare rhönite.
Geochemistry: (A. Love, App) olivine (Fa58.4±4.9La1.7±0.4, Fe/Mn=65.8±6.0 n=15); Al-Ti augite (Fs14.6±1.4Wo54.2±0.8, Fe/Mn=83.0±8.5, Al2O3=7.3±1.0 wt%, TiO2=1.9±0.7 wt%, n=14); Anorthite (An99.6±0.1, n=10); pleonaste spinel (Fe2+/(Fe2++Mg)=0.7±0.0; Al2O3=59.0±1.0, n=4).
Classification: (Angrite) M-S2 moderate weathering. Based on brecciated texture, ferroan olivine, clinopyroxene and endmember anorthite compositions, sample is an angrite.
Gadamis 009
History: The meteorite was found during a search in northwest Libya, and subsequently purchased by the main mass holder from a local dealer.
Physical characteristics: Dark brownish rock with some fusion crust.
Petrography: The meteorite shows a protogranular texture of up to 700 µm sized Al-Ti-augite (pinkish in thin section) plus less abundant calcic olivine, pleonaste spinel, and almost pure anorthite. Clinopyroxene grains often meet at 120 degree grain boundaries and poicilitically enclose spinel and anorthite. Minor phases include strongly altered troilite and kamacite. No kirschsteinite detected.
